Over the past year, we have seen the term “Cloud Computing” become very common place. Some see it as the next great thing in OS, Google is hoping you will be one of them. Even Microsoft seems to be pushing for it to be integral to our everyday lives. But what are the dangers lurking in the “Cloud”?
Skeletons in the Closet
The most obvious problem with storing everything is privacy. If you have all your files stored in the Cloud, what happens if that data becomes compromised? They are honestly looking for companies to use this technology to store their data and be able to access it from anywhere in the world. I know I have a few skeletons in my closet, I can just imagine what a big corporation would have. And if that data was hacked, it could destroy the company.
Information Theft
The next issue comes with all that personal data that you have floating around in the cloud. Yes, even if you are not getting into Cloud Computing, you have info out that just waiting to be nabbed. The Cloud refers not only to specialized services but social networks, photo sharing, even that free e-mail box you use. You have things posted about yourself, including your contacts, your interests, and where you have lived. All these things could be used by data miners to extrapolate even more info about you.
The Ultimate BotNet
It has probably already happened, but if you think about it, The Cloud would be the perfect host for the ultimate BotNet. Trick one user into infecting their storage in The Cloud and that’s all she wrote. In a matter of hours you have 100s of zombie virtual machines running scams on your mother. More about this scenario can be found in upcoming April issue of Popular Science in an article called Hacking The Cloud.
